Notes:

  • – In Greek mythology the Lethe was one of the five rivers of Hades, and everyone who drank from it experienced complete forgetfulness.

Am                                          dm       am
And I wait at the banks of the Lethe, my love
Am                  em              am
But I wait to forget you in vain
Am                       dm             am               em
And I drink more water and I drink more water
Am                                              dm               am
But still the wind whispers your name, my love,
Am                  em                   am
The wind  still whispers your name.

             Dm                                  am
And the birds chirp your name
Dm                                      am
And the grass rustles your name
Dm                              em           am
And the Lethe runs quite, all the same
Am                                          em          am
And I sit at the banks of the Lethe my love
Em                                          am
And the wind whispers your name.

The Lethe runs deep, the Lethe runs strong
Her banks are grassy and wide
Her waters run cool, her water tastes sweet
But I long for you by my side, my love.
I still long for you by my side.

The wind whispers softly here on my face
The Lethe runs stately and grand
The water refreshes and soothes my soul
Are those names the breeze whispers to me?
What it says I can’t understand.

And the birds chirp in the breeze
The grass rustles in the breeze
But the river runs quite, all the same
And I sit at the banks of this river here
And the wind whispers strange names.

This place here is lovely, sunbathed and warm
The waters, how smoothly they glide
And I drink more water and I drink more water
But a shadow falls o’er me, and I turn and see
A stranger that weeps at my side.

Who is this stranger? Who is this stranger?
This stranger that weeps at my side?
The Lethe runs deep, the Lethe runs strong
Her banks are tranquil, grassy and wide
But a stranger weeps at my side.

A stranger weeps at my side.
