More on the Transit of Venus
M has gracefully allowed me to post this photo of us here (I don’t post photos of other [non-famous] [sorry, M! :-)] people here without asking for permission first), and so here’s a photo of us at the city beach early this morning (~4:20am). As you can see, the atmosphere was lovely, and it would have been a morning well worth being out and about on even without Venus transiting in front of the sun. But transit it did, and so here’re some more photos of said event:
I took the last one with a UV filter that M brought and that I held in front of the lense of my camera – I like how you can spot Venus perfectly in the reflection that the combination of filter and camera produced, but not on the direct image of the sun itself.
We also got to see a false sunrise:
It was, generally speaking, simply just a wonderful morning – and considering that I just got home from our lecture series and improv rehearsal about 45 minutes ago definitely a long day. Definitely worth it thought! (If you want to see some more of my transit photos, click here!)

Crystal River, FL
From St George I kept wandering down the coast today, with some side-stops in Steinhatchee and Cedar Key (more in Cedar Key than in Steinhatchee), and saw a lot of pelicanes and some dolphins and manatees, as well as herons and birds that I cannot identify. Tonight I am in Crystal River, as you can see, and I’m going swimming with Manatees tomorrow in the am, before I keep wandering south.
Photos, as previously, are in the photo album for the trip.

Schleswig-Holstein morning
The good thing about taking a 6am train is (in the summer) that, while you don’t catch the dawn, you do get to see some lovely countryside with the sun still low on the horizon. The compartment I was in only had one window that opened, and it faced east (the train I was on went pretty much straight southwards all the way), so there’s lots of back light in these shots. And I know that popular wisdom tells you to avoid backlighting, but, you know, I actually kind of like it. Certainly on sunny late spring mornings. Thus, have a photograph of Schleswig-Holstein, somewhere between Flensburg and the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (Kiel Canal).
