Don’t stir up the Wind’s Bride
This photo comes from my archives, and is of a sculpture in Flensburg called Die Windsbraut. Literally, that’s “the wind’s bride”, but it’s also sometimes translated as “the tempest”, as Windsbraut is also the name of a type of whirlwind, and/or the elemental spirit of said whirlwind. If you use the term poetically, can also mean a female of a wild, stormy temperament.

Won’t you shine a light, the one-handed angel said on that cloudy day
This photo and the one before were taken in Mainz, in the cemetary next to the University. I spent the weekend in Mainz at the GAAS (German Association for American Studies) conference (more about which later this week, I think), and spent one of the breaks wandering around the cemetary, resting my brain and taking in some peace and quiet.
Now I need to go sleep – my alarm is going to ring at 3:30am, since my colleague M and I will try to observe the transit of Venus (fingers crossed for a cloudless sky until 6am, please – after that it can rain all week and I promise I won’t mind :-) ).

The man with the colorful bike
I’m heading home for the holidays in five days, and until then I have to finish editing and layouting ~250 pages of text, sort out presents, teach 4 classes, pack, rehearse, write, … . It’s a bit crazy right now, and if you were thinking about possibly wanting to hang out with me, come back after January 6th, ok? There’s not much space in my life right now for things that aren’t concerned with this book I have to finish.
Escape plans right now include going away somewhere in March, somewhere where its warm and sunny and one can drive around and wander along beaches, preferably where there aren’t too many poisonous animals around and I can communicate with people. But for now, another 60 pages of editing, and then dinner. I think my introduction turned out well, but chapter 2.3.4 *really* needs work. Etc. These are the thoughts to be thinking. Crunch crunch crunch. Deadline deadline deadline. La La La.
